The Palii

The Palio is the painted drawer that is given to the winner of thee Joust. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance the Palio was a large fine silk velvet drapery, from which clothes, curtains, tablecloths, cook, etc… Could be obtained, already in the 19th century the custom of giving to the winner a true painted banner. At the Pinacoteca of Ascoli Piceno there are several sketches for the Palio of Sant’Emidio made by the artist Giulio Gabrielli (1832-1910).
