The Sestieri of the
Quintana of Ascoli Piceno

The Piazzarola is perched in the upper part of the city, around a small square from which it takes its name. In its territory stand the Pia Fortress, from which the rest of the city is dominated, and the Papal Paper Mill. Porta Maggiore runs eastward, at the confluence of the Tronto and Castellano rivers. Cecco’s Bridge, which tradition has it was built in one night by poet and astrologer Francesco Stabili (Cecco d’Ascoli) with the help of the devil, is one of the most fascinating constructions along with the towering Malatesta Fortress. Porta Romana is located in the western part of the city and is crossed by the old Salaria road that led to Rome. Its symbol is a two-arched gate, called Gemina, which dates back to the 1st century BC. The remains of a Roman-era theater are preserved in its territory. Porta Solestà is gathered to the north, entirely beyond the city walls. It is a charming hamlet inhabited as early as 2,000 years ago. Porta Tufilla is identified with the building of the same name placed to defend the city and the medieval bridge. In its territory was built the small temple of Sant’Emidio at the caves that has collected the mortal remains of the patron saint for centuries. Sant’Emidio, finally, is the Sestiere that develops entirely within the city’s historic center and is rich in aristocratic palaces, Romanesque churches and important monuments from the medieval period.
